Locus Florence. Chapter V: FutureScapes 2023

Andreea Medar & Mălina Ionescu

Bastion 2, Timisoara

Locus Florens is chapter V. of the Viae Ferrae series. Each of the stages of the project meant a dialogue between a cultural and affective reality – a map of common places, with their parallel or converging histories, and the vegetal element, each time with a new load of meaning.

Vegetation either takes on a unifying role and evokes a perennial exterior (Viae Ferrae I); or on the contrary, it builds an artificial interior (Tiny Planet). In Viae IV wheat asserts its value as a cultivated plant that belongs to the natural environment and at the same time defines the Anthropocene, being synonymous with practice – and the basic food of humanity. In Locus Florens (and Viae III) the vegetal element is cut out from a dystopian exterior, which forces agriculture inward, underground, on the border between experimental laboratory and subsistence culture. In a discussion with a chatbot about indoor agriculture, microplants and environmental modification, the title of the project is proposed and the causes of environmental damage are identified in addition to the ways of adaptation. Without being asked directly, ChatGPT proposes, in conclusion, as the main culprit for the transformation of the environment at all levels, but also as part of the solution, the development of technology. Surely artificial intelligence will become or is already one of the active instances in the future determination of how the environment – urban, social, cultural, economic and natural – will evolve.
